1st outdoor ride of 2021 -- Tuesday, 1/12/2021

2021 mileage: 177.5

On a thoroughly overcast, gray and gloomy day, I went out today about 12:20 and did my first outdoor ride of the year. Because of considerable ice that we had received in the first couple of days of the year, I was concerned that it was unsafe to ride. But last night, my friend and fellow triker, Jim Alvey, told me the riding surfaces were now clear, and a drive-by observation I performed this morning seemed to bear that out.

II was attempting to ride the Packard/Platt Square, and was able to complete the majority of this 13.7-mile route. But a little over 10 miles into it, I got a flat -- the same wheel that had gone flat several times in December. However, all went well in the end -- I was successfully able to get home by means of Uber, put the rack on our car, and go back down to get the trike and bring it home.

Thanks to the patient help and teaching of my friend Dan Cogan, I now feel ready to try to do my first solo tube change. But given the 30° conditions, I didn't want to try this outside today, and figured our garage tomorrow morning would provide a much better environment for this attempt.
