137th outdoor ride of 2021 - Thursday, 9/30/2021

2021 mileage: 4352.9

Another gorgeous fall day for a ride today. I began at about 11:15 in 55° sunshine, and rode the Platt/Packard Square (13.6 mile in 1:45), finishing in 64° sunshine.

This gave me 403.1 miles for the month of September, so that I made my goal of 400 miles for the Great Cycle Challenge (a fundraiser to help fight childhood cancer).

Also, it was nice to see again today early in the ride my friend Doug Franklin, sauntering down the trail on his daily walk.

As I finished up today, a mildly dismaying realization occurred to me. As a big-time numbers guy, a major portion of my enjoyment of riding comes from my recording my statistics and blogging about my riding. Given my strong genetic heritage, I hope to be riding for several decades yet. However, if this comes to pass, my total mileage and speed will almost assuredly decrease. But then, as I reflected on it, I thought, "That's OK ... I'm going to try and make my mark by doing exceptionally well for an old man." 😄

136th outdoor ride of 2021 - Wednesday, 9/29/2021

2021 mileage: 4339.3

Yesterday I wrote that I needed to do three consecutive days of my 20-mile round trip to Baker Rd. in order to meet my 400-mile goal for September in the Great Cycle Challenge. However, when I reviewed my stats in the evening, I noticed that I had forgotten to note one ride of 14.5 miles on the stationary bike. Once I added that in, it cut my mileage down to the point where I could make it with two more of my 14-mile rides.

So today, I began about 12:30 and rode the Packard/Platt Square (13.6 miles) in 1:44—a slow ride, but on a BEAUTIFUL day. Unbroken calm sunshine, and 69° degrees when I began, up to 72° when I finished. It allowed me to return to riding in shorts and t-shirt for the first time in several weeks.

135th outdoor ride of 2021 - Tuesday, September 28, 2021

2021 mileage: 4325.7

I'm down to the point where I needed to do three consecutive 20-mile round trips to Baker Rd. in order to achieve my goal of 400 miles for the month that I'm aiming for in the Great Cycle Challenge (the fundraiser to fight children's cancer). And weather, trike, and health -- everything cooperated today. I left about 11:30 and rode the 20.2-mile round trip in 2:33. And, as they are saying on the weather, "It's about as fine a day as you're going to see at the end of September"—bright sunshine throughout, and 58° when I started, climbing to 66° during the ride.

2021 mileage: 4305.5

This may well have been a mistake, but I chose to ride on the stationary bike today, so that I could finish up the second half of the movie Moneyball, which I had begun yesterday. Then afterwards, I wanted to watch the Tigers' matinee contest (a makeup of last Wednesday's rain out). I say that it may have been a mistake, because it ended up being a gorgeous, late summer-like afternoon, with a high of 80° under bright sunshine.

At any rate, I did get in a good ride (20.9 miles in 1:32), and am feeling more encouraged now about my chances of making my goal of 400 miles for the month in the Great Cycle Challenge, as I am now up to 341 miles for the month.

2021 mileage: 4284.6

On Friday, I made the long drive (roughly 235 miles) up to Interlochen in northern Michigan for a reunion of my high school alma mater, the Interlochen Arts Academy (a fine arts boarding school). Today I made the trip back home, and in addition to having to take the last two days off from riding, I was thinking I'd take today off, too, given the long drive. But then I realized that with the Great Cycle Challenge I'm riding in September (as a fundraiser to help fight children's cancer), my goal of 400 miles for the month was in jeopardy if I took today entirely off.

So, sticking with my recent theme of baseball movies, I climbed on the stationary bike late this afternoon and rode 16.5 miles in 1:10 while watching the first half of Moneyball, the 2011 movie starring Brad Pitt that looks at the Oakland A's and their approach to building a team based on statistics, in order to help fight (as a low-budget team) the advantage possessed by big-money clubs like the New York Yankees.

2021 mileage: 4268.1

With another day today where weather kept me inside, I rode another hour (14.5 miles) and finished up the second half of Trouble With the Curve (which I began yesterday). I'll now be taking three days off, as tomorrow morning I'm heading up to Interlochen for a reunion of alumni of the Interlochen Arts Academy, a boarding school from which I graduated high school in 1975. The following picture shows me giving my address (as Co-Valedictorian) to the assembled audience at our graduation in Kresge Auditorium on June 6, 1975.

I'll be coming back Sunday, but after the long drive, don't expect to ride until Monday.

2021 mileage: 4253.6

Sticking with my recent theme of baseball movies, today while a daylong rain kept me inside on the stationary bike, I watched Clint Eastwood's 2012 movie Trouble With the Curve ... one I hadn't even known of until recently, when I Googled a list of baseball movies. Actually, I should say I watched the first half of it; riding for an hour, I did 13.6 miles on the bike.

134th outdoor ride of 2021 - Tuesday, September 21, 2021

2021 mileage: 4240.0

This morning I hoped to ride my 20-mile round trip to Dexter (Baker Rd.), and consequently i left early (7:30). But when I got out to the trike, I saw that both my power supplies (for the phone and for the auxiliary battery) were low, so I came back in to plug them in and charge up. A little over an hour later, I went back out, and while they had charged up considerably, both were short of fully charged, and because of this, I decided to settle for a shorter ride. (It could be quite disastrous if I ran out of power while still some miles from home.)

So I rode the Packard/Platt Square (13.6 miles) in 1:52, and saw Jim Alvey again today, too. It was a slow, but determined, ride—on a very gray day (69°). Fall is coming ...

133rd outdoor ride of 2021 - Monday, September 20, 2021

2021 mileage: 4226.4

Good ride today in persisting summery heat (I began at 11:30 in 74° heat which rose to 81° during my ride), as I did the Platt/Packard Square (13.7 miles) in 1:47.

Early in the ride I was pleased to see my friend Jim Alvey again ... he recognized my blue trike, smiled, and said, "Hey! You got it back!"

132nd outdoor ride of 2021 - Sunday, September 19, 2021

2021 mileage: 4212.8

Today I waited till late afternoon, watching the Tigers' heartening victory first, and then beginning about 4:10, I rode the Packard/Platt Square (13.7 miles) in 1:44, crashing through another mileage milestone for the year (4200). Not a very fast time today, but I wasn't really pushing myself hard—just enjoying the beautiful sunshine and warmth (81° when I started, down to 79° at the end).

131st outdoor ride of 2021 - Saturday, September 18, 2021

2021 mileage: 4199.1

My good friend Doug Franklin has season tickets to Michigan football along with his wife Carole, and she couldn't use hers this week, so he kindly offered it to me.

His schedule prevented him from giving me a ride, so I figured I could walk to the game (about 3 miles, as I have done in the past). However, as I age, my walking has gotten less steady, and I have fallen more than once, cutting up my face. Michelle discouraged my walking there, joking that, "I don't want you to arrive at the game looking like Jesus Christ!"

In light of this concern, I left home at 8:30 this morning and rode most of my Platt/Packard Square route, except that near the end, I crossed Ann Arbor-Saline Rd., and turned right heading north on the trail to go up to Pioneer High School, where I could lock my trike and leave it during the game, as shown below. This morning ride featured partly cloudy skies, and pleasantly cool (but not cold) weather—65° when I began, and 69° when I arrived at Pioneer and locked up my trike. I covered a ride of 13.5 miles, in 1:55. And the typically heavy game-day congestion in Ann Arbor didn't really affect me until the last half mile or so, when I had to slow to walking speed behind a large group of fans walking up the trail toward the stadium.

My younger brother John (JB) is Senior Editor of The Wolverine, a publication covering University of Michigan sports, and I knew he would be in the press box, so I texted him once I was in my seat, saying where I was, and he replied that he'd try to spot me. Shortly thereafter, he said, "Found you! Santa hits the Big House." This confused me mildly at first, since I was wearing blue, not red ... but then I remembered my white beard. 😆

The game was most enjoyable—Michigan handled their opponent, Northern Illinois University, rather easily, winning 63-10. Doug took this selfie of us just a short way into the game.

It was such a lovely early fall afternoon, too (though I suppose that technically it is still late summer). I got this picture showing the typically full attendance (over 100,000 fans) at the Big House (a nickname given Michigan Stadium decades ago by legendary sports broadcaster Keith Jackson).

However, this means that people are really packed in; I was able to communicate with Doug by typing notes on my phone. I told him midway through the second quarter that I appreciated the ticket more than I could say ... but I realized that I had forgotten how enduring the close seating in the Big House is a young man's game, and since that description clearly no longer applied to me, I was going to slip out soon (I ended up waiting until after another Michigan touchdown, which didn't take long) and begin making my way home. This gave me another 3.9 miles in 31 minutes, for a riding day without incident. I also realized that my riding in the last three days has given me a new annual mileage record, as my best previously was 2019, when I did 4165.5 miles.

130th outdoor ride of 2021 - Friday, September 17, 2021

2021 mileage: 4181.7

Today was a double bonus day for my riding. First, my friend Doug was able to find some tubes that would work for the rear wheel on my newer trike. He ordered them, and they arrived yesterday. He came over early this morning, and helped to get one installed.

Then, also yesterday, Jack's (the dealer in Dearborn) called to say that my older backup trike was ready for pick up, so I went over and got that this morning.

With a wealth of riches confronting me, over the noon hour today I had to go to our credit union, so I rode my newer trike over there (a 15.6-miles round trip in 1:41). I started a little after 11:30, with a temperature of 79°, which rose to 81° during the ride.

Tuesday, September 14, 2021

2021 mileage: 4169.1

As my trikes are still out of commission, I rode once more today on our stationary bike. Over the noon hour, I did an hour and 10 minutes on there (16.4 miles), while watching the second half of The Natural, the first half of which I watched yesterday.

Having watched Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, and now The Natural in recent days, I think tomorrow I'll try one that I haven't seen before—Trouble With the Curve, from 2012, starring Clint Eastwood.

2021 mileage: 4152.7

This has been an odd day. Due to a communications snafu between Michelle and me, I thought I had a colonoscopy this morning. So I fasted all day yesterday, and went through the prep for it—and then when we drove to Huron Gastro early this morning, it was with both surprise and dismay that we learned I was not on their list.

So I came home, enjoyed having some breakfast and a low-key morning, and then late morning I climbed on the stationary bike and rode 1:10 (14.7 miles) while watching the first half of The Natural (staying with my recent theme of baseball movies).

This also put me over halfway to my goal of 400 miles for the month of September, which I'm riding in the Great Cycle Challenge (a fundraiser aimed at combatting childhood cancer).

2021 mileage: 4138.6

I didn't ride yesterday, as we went to Michelle's hometown of Charlotte to see her sister Colette who is up from her home in Florida for a few days visiting her parents. So it was good to get back to it today, and I got up and rode early, starting about 7:30 on our stationary bike, and riding 22.3 miles in 1:45.

On Friday I watched the baseball movie Field of Dreams, but after I posted high praise of it, one friend offered a contrary opinion, saying, "Give me Bull Durham." Deciding to stay with baseball, I decided to give Bull Durham a try—I thought I had seen it before, but as I watched it, I didn't recall it. It was OK, but I would sum up the comparison by saying that, in my view, Field of Dreams is beautifully crafted poetry, whereas Bull Durham is, by comparison, gritty graffiti. Also, I find Field of Dreams to be MUCH more thoroughly about baseball than is Bull Durham.

 2021 mileage: 4116.3

Yesterday during my ride on our stationary bike, I watched my favorite movie (On Golden Pond), and today I watched one which is very high on that list—Field of Dreams. As an avid baseball fan, this movie really does it for me, and it allowed me to rack up another 23.1 miles, in 1:41.

2021 mileage: 4093.2

During this afternoon's ride on our stationary bike, I watched my all-time favorite movie: On Golden Pond. I believe I admire this 1981 film (released when I was 24) so highly because of two primary factors:

1) Its thematic emphasis on aging, family relations, and the difference between generations—a subject which has interested me, and to which I've been able to relate, all my life, having a dad who was just a few weeks shy of 50 when I was born;

2) Its masterful musical score.

This gave me a ride of 24.5 miles in 1:48

2021 mileage: 4068.7

I called the trike dealer (Jack's in Dearborn) this noon, asking the owner, Brian (who I trusted to be able to understand this simple message despite my garbled speech), "What's up, Brian?" He checked, and told me that my trike is 99% done, but the seat frame is missing one specialized bolt that they have to get from the manufacturer (TerraTrike in Grand Rapids), so it's been ordered and should be here by the weekend.

In light of that, I rode on our stationary bike for the second straight day, and today finished up the second half of Schindler's List, which I had begun yesterday. That covered 1:40, and gave me 25.1 miles.

Tuesday, September 7, 2021

Tuesday, September 7, 2021

2021 mileage: 4043.6

I took my backup trike to the dealer today, to have them adjust a problem with the seat that has had me leaning notably to the left for some time now. So, with both of my trikes unusable at present, I returned to our stationary bike, which was such a useful option for me last winter. I've used it very little, though, since spring arrived—but still, of my total mileage for the year (4043.6), 2176.8 of them (or a little more than half) have been on the stationary bike.

While riding, I watched a movie, as I like to do—the incredibly moving 1993 film Schindler's List, about the plight of Polish jews during World War II. However, as it is over 3 hours long, I decided just to watch the first 90 minutes today (for a ride of 22.1 miles) and save the second half for tomorrow.

129th outdoor ride of 2021 - Sunday, September 5, 2021

2021 mileage: 4021.5

Today was a huge, HUGE joy, as I got to ride with Christy for only about the third or fourth time ever. We had planned to meet out at our garage and ride at 7:30, and when she showed up a bit past 7:20, she told me that she had vainly hoped to beat me out there, but as I told her, I went out early to move our car and to air up my tires, as is a Sunday custom for me.

We had a lovely ride in early Sunday stillness and sunshine, going to Marsh Park and then two loops in Stonebridge on the way back. This gave us 14.9 miles in 1:39 ... as she slyly noted, I'm gradually working her to longer and longer rides. We hope to do the 20-mile Baker Rd. round trip sometime this fall, and then perhaps next year, the 31-miler to Matthei.

I was doubly glad to get a good ride in today, since tomorrow is out. Michelle and I are leaving this afternoon for a brief overnight getaway in a Bed and Breakfast over southwest of Lansing.

128th outdoor ride of 2021 - Saturday, September 4, 2021

2021 mileage: 4006.6

The day began with a big disappointment. The tubes I needed for my new trike finally arrived from Amazon yesterday, and when I went to put one on this morning, I got stuck -- but my friend Doug Tidd was able to come over and help me out. However, after we put it in, and pumped it up, before it was even completely inflated, it blew out. Undaunted, we tried a second, and that one let us blow it up a little closer to the recommended pressure -- before it, too, blew. Down to our third and last tube now, we tried that ... but it, too, blew out (after we had gotten it fully blown up, but before we got it reattached to the trike). Now, I really don't know what to do. The dealer, Jack's, told me the tubes they use are out of stock, and they aren't supposed to get any more until MAY! In light of that, I'd be tempted to give Amazon another try -- but when I did that this morning, I was told that this item was unavailable.

But then, there was a BIG milestone today - going over 4000 miles for the year far and away the earliest I ever have. After watching Michigan open their college football season with a solid win over Western Michigan, I went out late afternoon and rode a round trip to Marsh Park, with a loop in Stonebridge added in on the way home, for a 12.6-mile ride in 1:19.

While riding, I listened to my John Denver playlist on Spotify, and though this had me smiling throughout, I was especially delighted to hear this song, which my siblings Marianne and John and I sang often in our teens (with me at the piano).

127th outdoor ride of 2021 - Friday, September 3, 2021

2021 mileage: 3994.0

Today's schedule was a bit funky. I had a rehearsal with my trumpet playing cousin Rich Harris and our guitarist, Erik Gibelyou, late morning, and then I waited at home for a call from Michelle to come pick her up from school (where she was busily preparing for the new year which begins next week). Finally after we exchanged texts, I rode at 3:30. The tubes for my new trike arrived today, but I haven't gotten the installation done yet, so I again rode my older backup trike. It went OK, but I will be very glad when I can return to the new one.

I rode a round trip to the near edge of Saline (at the intersection of Woodland Dr. and Ann Arbor-Saline Rd.), to give me 11.2 miles in 1:14. And upon finishing, I had a moment. That older trike is significantly more top heavy than the newer one, and I was reminded of this as I made the right turn into our complex. I couldn't hold it from tipping over, and as I spilled out, my head cracked into the cement curb, making me VERY glad to be wearing my helmet (as I always do). And, as He always seems to do, God provided me with an attending angel ... a woman who was just turning into the complex then, and stopped, asking me in alarm, "Are you OK?" She was eager to help me get up, and was relieved when I indicated that I was fine. When I showed her my card explaining why I can't speak, and saying that I didn't mean to seem rude or unfriendly, she laughed, "Oh my God! I didn't think that AT ALL!"

Anyway, I'm sure I'll be fine in the morning, but for tonight I'm feeling mildly scraped up and sore, so I'm glad to be spending the evening in my La-Z-Boy with my feet up, and watching the Tigers take on the Reds down in Cincinnati.

Had I not already committed to riding the Great Cycling Challenge in support of efforts to battle childhood cancer, i probably would have taken today as a rest day. But in order to make my (self-imposed) goal of 400 miles for the month of September, I need to average over thirteen and a half miles per day, and taking the day off completely would have made it, while not impossible, just one notch harder.

126th outdoor ride of 2021 - Thursday, September 2, 2021

2021 mileage: 3982.8

This morning I rode to Marsh Park, and then on the way back did loops on Interfirst Dr., Bicentennial Pkwy, and in Stonebridge, to give me a 15.0-mile ride in 1:35, while listening to the Spotify playlist I've created of the superb past 4 CDs that my cousin, trumpeter Rich Harris, has released. He is about to record a new one (Sept. 15-16), and has asked me to be his pianist ... I am greatly honored by this, and looking forward to the recording sessions, as well as to our rehearsal tomorrow morning (we have had one already).

125th outdoor ride of 2021 - Wednesday, September 1, 2021

2021 mileage: 3967.8

In September I am riding the Great Cycle Challenge, which is aimed at raising funds to fight childhood cancer. I am pursuing a goal I set for myself to ride 400 miles in September, (Contributions are gratefully accepted on my page:

I got the month of to a good start this morning by riding a round trip to Baker Rd. (Dexter) for the first time since August 18) in LOVELY riding weather ... slightly cooler air has moved in as fall approaches, and when I set off at 7 a.m. today, it was 60° and sunny, climbing to 68° during my ride. By taking my slightly shorter route, I did 18.3 miles in a few seconds over 2 hours even.

I remain intensely grateful to have my old (backup) trike to use while I await the tubes for my new one. However, the last two days have reminded me of one of its unpleasant features. The handlebar is so placed that on the upstroke, my left leg scrapes it, and that has opened a raw patch on my left thigh. Additionally, my right ankle is slightly striking the pedal crank—so my poor left side is feeling it!
